Licences issued as code 8 are now called code B. According to gov.za, code B is “Code B: This is for a motor vehicle, including a minibus, bus and goods vehicle, with a gross vehicle mass not exceeding 3 500 kg. You must be 18 years or older to apply.”

Yes. Code B is the current name for the old code 8, as the Western Cape transport department lists it.

Can I tow a trailer with code 8 (B)?
Only a trailer with a gross vehicle mass up to 750 kg. For a heavier trailer you need code EB.
How long is a code 8 licence card valid?
Five years at the moment. Cabinet approved ten-year cards for codes A, A1, B and EB on 29 July 2026, but until the regulation is amended you must keep renewing every five years.
