Postal code questions

What is the difference between a street code and a box code?

South Africa uses separate postal codes for street addresses and for PO Boxes. Put the street code on anything delivered to a house or business, including courier and online orders. Put the box code on post to a PO Box or Private Bag at a post office. Many suburbs have both, and they are usually different numbers.

How many digits does a South African postal code have?

Four. On the Post Office list they run from 0001 (Pretoria) to 9992 (Bethulie), and codes that start with 0 keep the leading zero, so Pretoria is 0002 and not 2.

Is a postal code the same as a zip code?

Yes. Forms built for the United States often say "zip code"; in South Africa enter the four-digit postal code for your suburb.

Do I still need a postal code if the Post Office is not delivering?

Yes. Couriers, banks, online shops and government forms all use the postal code to route and verify an address, whether or not the post goes through the South African Post Office.

Postal codes come from the South African Post Office's domestic postal code list, and post office branch status from SAPO's branch list (updated 2026-04-24). Provinces and distances are worked out from GeoNames place data. Spotted a wrong code? Tell us.
